The incredibly high fatality rate for motorcyclists

When you study motorcycle statistics, one thing that you’ll find is that the fatality rate in accidents is much higher than it is for other vehicles. One study compared the number of fatalities based on the miles driven in each type of vehicle, and it found that motorcycle fatalities were 29 times as common.

Part of the reason for this is simply that fatalities are more likely for motorcyclists to begin with. An accident that may only have resulted in injuries had they been in a car may turn fatal on a motorcycle, with its lower levels of protection. It is certainly helpful to wear a helmet and other protective gear, but that won’t necessarily keep you from suffering serious injuries if a driver makes a mistake and strikes your motorcycle.

Another part of this equation is that motorcycles aren’t used nearly as frequently as cars. There are far fewer overall motorcycle fatalities during the year. But that still means the rate these fatalities happen at is high because of the relative infrequency of motorcycles being used in the first place.

What can you do if you lose a loved one?

If you’ve lost a loved one in a tragic motorcycle accident caused by someone else, you may be worried about covering funeral costs, medical bills and many other financial obligations. Plus, that person could’ve been the main breadwinner for your family, so you’re also thinking about lost wages and lost future earnings. This is going to have a dramatic financial impact on your family.

As such, though it is true that no amount of financial compensation can bring that person back, it can be very beneficial to look into your rights. This can help to take some stress off of your family during this time.
